Afghanistan; officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located in the centre of Asia, forming South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. With a population of about 26 million, it has an area of 647,500 km2 (250,001 sq mi), making it the 42nd most populous nation in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan to the southeast, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimated in 2006 that northern Afghanistan has an average 1.6 billion barrels of crude oil, 15.7 trillion cubic feet (440 bn m3) of natural gas, and 562 million bbl of natural gas liquids. Other reports show that the country has huge amounts of lithium, copper, gold, coal, iron ore and other minerals.

In November 2007, a 30-year lease was granted for the Aynak copper mine to the china Metallurgical Group, for $3 billion, making it the largest foreign investment and private business venture in Afghanistan’s history.
